“The Coat Closet”

~ Rachel (LaFave) Jeffers

“I have many memories of Grammy, as I am the eldest grandchild, but one of my favorite memories is my ‘coat closet’ memory. Grammy’s coat closet was a nook in the wall. It was a closet that was formed underneath the stairway, so it was slanted and low, and from a child’s perspective, it was a great ‘cove.’ Following a family dinner, Uncle Andrew and Aunt Amy would always take us out sledding on the ‘big’ hill. We loved that. But Grammy would not let us out of the house without a trip to the coat closet. Regardless of what we brought with us, she added extra layers; hats, mittens, scarves. I remember always being mismatched, but always warm. She was so cute with her gentle insistence. I see that quality now in my own mom, when it comes to my kids and the question of enough layers. =) I will always fondly remember being bundled up against my will, and now know that with each layer of clothing she added, she was adding a layer of love. I miss Grammy, and I look forward to seeing her again.”

“Buttons & Chewing Gum; a Grandchild’s Collection of Memories”

~ Rhonda (LaFave) Morales

I too, have many fond memories of Grammy. In so many ways, she was concerned with the welfare of her grandchildren. Not only bundling us up as we went outside to play on a cold winter evening, but also took great care in the preparation of healthy snacks and lunches for us while we visited in her home. I especially loved her sandwiches made with wheat bread, and no matter what kind of meat layered between, always accompanied by lettuce and mayonnaise. I loved her frozen yogurt, in lieu of ice cream, and I fondly remember her chewing gum drawer…spearmint was my flavor of choice.

I also remember her button collection that on occasion she would pull from the closet in which it was stored. It was an assortment of mismatched buttons, but made for a great craft. Mostly what I remember and loved so much, was when it came time to depart, she and Grandpa would stand on the front porch and wave as we pulled out of the long driveway and made our way down the road. She loved visits from her family and I think was a little sad when it came time to say goodbye. I loved her gentle touch and her loving way. I miss her very much, but hope to see her one day soon!
